ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP:
We are elements of nature: our soma and psyche are reflections of the planet, each intricately embedded in the other. In this era of rapid information processing, high-speed technology, and sedentary workplaces in urban environments, it can be challenging to remember this essential relationship. We can lose our ground and our connection to the planet on the freeway of life, especially when our minds juggle so much input, expectation, and obligation. The body and soul often get left behind in this overwhelm as we shut down and tune out to cope. How do we quiet the monkey mind and receive our environment? And once we are in relationship with place, how do we engage and interact? In this somatic and expressive approach to becoming more fully human as elemental creatures, we combine the technologies of breath, vocalization, contact, movement and stillness to occupy our soma/psyche and open the portals of perception. We discover how tree, rock, sky, and water reflect aspects of our being by embodying and expressing them. Spontaneous dances, intuitive songs, creative writings and inner contemplations effortlessly emerge as we invite in the spirit of place through this sensory motor encounter.
This daylong workshop on Mount Tamalpais combines practice, theory and application to provide you with a set of somatic-expressive tools and a conceptual map for embodying nature as well as a template for guiding others. This approach has been of particular interest to dancers, environmentalists, movement educators, and eco-psychologists.
LOGISTICS:
The entire afternoon workshop will be spent outdoors on the verdant hills of MT. Tamalpais State Park. Please dress in appropriate layers and wear study walking shoes (closed toe with good grip) and hat. Bring a bagged lunch, snacks and full water bottle. Further details will be sent one week prior.

Jamie McHugh, RSMT is a Registered Somatic Movement Therapist, somatic coach, dancer, and artist living on the California coast. The creator of Somatic Expression® – Body Wisdom for Modern Minds, Jamie has guided somatic-expressive encounters with the natural world for the past 25 years. “Embodying Nature” has been presented through Tamalpa Institute in Marin, Breitenbush Hot Springs in Oregon, Alanus University in Germany, Orchidea Lodge in Switzerland, and at Sea Ranch, California. CANCELLATION POLICY:
We will refund any registration fee minus a $30 handling charge for any cancellations received one week (i.e., by March 12) in advance via email (events@holosinstitute.net). Cancellations within a week of the event are non-refundable.
Full refund if this event is cancelled due to weather.
CONTINUING EDUCATION:
This course meets the qualifications for 6 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
Holos Institute is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CEPA 90905) to sponsor continuing education for MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs . Holos maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content.
CEU certificates will be available at the end of this workshop but you must pre-register and pay for CEUs.
Learning objectives:
At the end of this workshop, participants will
1) Be able to list at least 3 somatic tools for enlivening the body and quieting the mind
2) Be able to describe their environment pre-verbally to access somatic-emotional information
3) Be able to describe a list of somatic-emotional information into symbolic actions, images and wordplay
4) Be able to explain clinical applications of this methodology
