This 4 night/5 day intensive workshop is designed for licensed and pre-licensed mental health professionals and anyone sincerely working in the helping professions.
We will explore techniques and various processes of holding a clinical container outdoors, facilitating a deeper connection with the natural world and develop the skills and confidence to lead nature-based healing work. The program is designed for psychotherapists and facillitators of deep learning who are seeking to learn more skills and experience as they move their clinical work outdoors, expand into an ecologically based framework and develop nature-based programs. The learning style is highly experiential and immersive. The workshop will fill you with new ideas, skills and approaches for your work but will also be very personally transformative.
Topics included are (but not limited to):
- Ecotherapy practice basics
- Orienting to landscape for practitioners
- Clinical preparations and screening
- Considerations of personality, culture and personal history for ecotherapy
- Ecotherapy and the nervous system/trauma work
- A model for conducting safe and effective ecotherapy
- Interventions that deepen connection
- Working with liminal states in nature
- Addressing eco- anxiety
- Fostering resilience and reciprocity
The program will be hosted at the beautiful Bell Valley Retreat Center outside of Boonville, CA in Mendocino County. The wild and lush 600+ acreas of rolling hills and rustic yet elegant accomodations offer the perfect place to explore nature-based work. As much as possible, our work will be held outdoors with some utilization of a hilltop yurt and converted barn for indoor activities.
FEES are all inclusive of tuition, meals and lodging.

There is a range of accomodations from the elegant turn-of-the-century Toll House to well-appointed glamping tents.
Breakfasts will be self-serve/very basic (bring your own preferences if you want) and lunches and dinners will be amazingly delicious hearty, healthy, organic fare prepared lovingly by Holos’s exclusive chef (Candice) with most basic dietary preferences considered.
All participants will be asked to pitch in to help with various community tasks such as meal prep assistance, kitchen clean-up, fire tending, presentation assistance, and final gear breakdown, etc. We find that this fosters a greater sense of inclusion and community.
Some discounts are available for slightly increased responsibility on mostly meal realted tasks. We offer this discount to ease the financial burden for participants and do so on a self-reporting basis in good faith. In this moment we have space for 6 “work/trade” discounts of $200. These are offered on a first-come-first-serve basis but we strongly encourage you to condsider if you really need this discount before requesting.
In addition to this discount, we have very, very limited partial scholarships available. Please email us if you need a greater discount from what is offered and we will work with as best as we can. Scholarships are prioritized for BIPOC identified persons.

In this particular retreat, and in consideration of COVID concerns, we are aiming to offer private accomodations as best as possible on all levels. The exception to this will be accomodations in the BunkHouse which is quite spacious and will still have a very limited occopancy.
~ The Toll House is an elegant, turn-of-the-last-century building that has 4 lovely rooms – 3 ensuite. 3 of these rooms would work well as “shared” for either a couple or friends. It is about a half mile walk up to the knoll where most of our programs will take place but a short stroll to the masin dining area. (You can drive up to the knoll area) FEE = $1300
~ The Bunk House is attached to the Toll House. It has 2 very spacious areas: the main linving room is set up to accomodate up to 8 people but for this event we are limiting it to only 2. The adjacent kitchen area has a queen size Murphy bed. It has an elegant bathroom, private deck/garden area and private kitchen FEE = $1245
~Barn Rooms the barn has 3 private rooms of which 2 will be available for our retreat. While these are on the small side, they are very private and offer easy access to the barn bathrooms/kitchen and an outdoor shower area. FEE = $1245
~ The Tent Cabins are new additions that are spacious and luxurious canvas cabins up on a knoll that is far back from the main road (but you can drive/park nearby). Residents use the well appointed bathhouse that is an easy walk from the cabins. FEE = $1285
~ Platform tents are elegant glamping tents with electricity, private decks, and luxury bedding. Each is a unique walk up to the bathhouse. These offer the most privacy and sense of “wilderness” while still feeling a sense of community in the upper knoll area which is where most of our sessions will take place. FEE = $1220

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS
This program offers 20 Continuing Educational units to MFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCs.
The fee for a CEU certifucate is an additional $40.
This course/program meets the qualifications for 20 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Holos Institute is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs . Holos maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. Holos Institute is a CAMFT Approved CEU Provider (#90905)
CEU participants will be required to complete an online survey at the conclusion of this program in order to obtain the CEU certificate. This will require about 15 – 20 minutes.

In all of our continuing education programs, some activities within the course or program are not offered for continuing education credit . These activities include meal times, breaks and personal explorations not related to client care. In this particular program’s daily schedule, we are NOT counting one hour per day of personal experience/reflection time nor evening programs that are part of program schedule toward CEUs.
At the conclusion of this program, participants may expect to be able to:
- Describe and design an eco-based program for psychological healing
- List at least 6 interventions that will create a deeper connection with the natural world
- Describe the 3 phases of an ecotherapy session
- List at least 3 “red-flags” for ecotherapy work
- Describe how a practitioner should best orient to a landscape
- List at least 3 important practical considerations in setting up an ecotherapy session
- Explain how ecotherapy impacts the nervous system
- Describe limbic system processing and how ecotherapy might address disregulated/traumatised self-experiences
- Name at least 3 ways that working with liminal states can enhance psychotherapy outcomes.
- Offer a basic discription of a deep mirroring process
- List at least 3 ways to clinicially address eco-anxiety
- Name at least 3 ways to foster reciprocity in eco-therapy
- Name the 4 part cycle of an eco-grieving process
- List at least 3 important considerations when preparing for an ecotherapy session
Obviously, all of the pandemic precautions and protocols are rapidly changing and we are trying our best to keep up with both federal, state and county mandates.
As a safety precaution and with respect to the retreat center protocols, ALL participants are required to be be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The center may request a vaccination card proof.
In addition, anyone traveling via air, or other mass transit should be prepared to take a rapid test upon arrival.
These requirements are fluid in respect to the changing situation of the pandemic.
This retreat is, unfortunately, only accessible by car. We will be do our best to organize carpooling to/from the retreat. Historically this has always worked out but we cannot guarantee rides that may be needed. However, we are committed to working with you and your specific needs.
