Psyche and Nature:  Taking the Clinical Container Outdoors with Ecotherapy

Course instructor: Jan Edl Stein, MFT
Holos Institute, CAMFT Approved Provider #90905

This course meets the qualifications for 6 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.  Holos Institute is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs . Holos maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content.

In this daylong workshop for psychotherapists and other healing arts practitioners, Jan will offer a model for exploring the inner landscape of the client as well as a simple model for ecotherapy or outdoor-based psychotherapy. Jan will cover basic practical considerations as one shifts the clinical container outdoors that includes logistics, best practices for therapeutic transition, and clinical assessment for process refinement. She will explore the fundamental clinical application of ecopsychology principles. She will also present a nature-based context for specific psychological issues. Through experiential exercises, you may begin to explore your own inner landscape and learn, first-hand, the basics of an earth-based psychotherapy. There will also be a chance to discuss clinical case material in relation to an ecopsychological framework. We will also have a discussion about cultivating eco-resilience as well as eco-grief processes.

At the close of this workshop participants will be able to…
1. Describe an ecopsychological perspective in clinical practice
2. Identify 3 fundamentals of a nature-based psychotherapy
3. Design and conduct outdoor therapy sessions
4. Identify the phases of an outdoor therapy session including specific clinical interventions
5. Apply a map of the psyche that is described by cycles in nature
6. Utilize resilience processes for grief and despair reactions to climate change
